One thing the Cabriolet has given me is a glimps of what a classic sports car might be like. Of coarse it’s far from a sports car, it’s wrong wheel drive, it’s too tall (in comparison), and it’s too boxy. I’d say to slow but the old British jobs I’m comparing it too aren’t known for their brut power, or straight line speed.

About a week ago a customer came into my gas station with an early Spitfire with small chrome bumpers, it was clearly an unrestored survivor and it was magnificent. The owner was kind enough to let me get a close look at it and I fell in love. I need one. Here’s a nice lightly modified 1975 model I found on CL for a hair under 10k.

Just as long as you don’t go Full BiTurbo and start converting it to straight six with modified rear suspension, frame stiffeners, and a permanent hardtop.

Nah. If I get one I’ll be keeping it original maybe some 15” wheels and wider tires like the one pictured, and Either swap in a 5 speed or overdrive trans as a lot of them just have a 4 speed with no over drive

There are quite a large range of Spitfire kit planes out there. Everything from available plans to IIRC near complete kits. For example:

Mk3s are the best, but also most expensive. Honestly, MGB prices (and even TR6s) have come down a lot - to Spitfire/Midget money and the larger cars are substantially better value .

You can get a halfway decent B around here (DC) for 5K.  My Dad had both, and the B is the better car to live with, though the Spitfire is fun in the curves. The IRS in some of the Spitfires is tricky (axle hop) , and they are body on frame, which is both a blessing (rust control vs. the B) and a curse (the Bs are much more rigid as they’re unibody).

Most early Spitfires won’t have OD - tends to be a later car thing when smog controls started to choke them out. Early cars have a non-sychro first gear as well. Used boxes aren’t cheap, so you want one with the conversion done or a factory O/D car.

Carbs suck from that era, Webers are a sensible/mandatory conversion.

Do it!

But also don’t be me unless you’re fine to spend years building the thing ;)

There’s tons of low scale stuff you can do to these as you’re running them. For 5-speed swaps people usually use the Ford Type 9 over here, but not sure what had them over the other side of the pond.

Later swing-axle cars (1500s) had much better rear end behaviour, but if you get an early one all you need to do is swap in the later spring (maybe driveshafts and uprights), but it’s dead easy to do :)

Should be able to pep the US-spec engines up a bit too. They're lower compression, but a little head skim is no big thing on these ;)

The one pictured already has that Ford 5 speed, it’s bored over, and has 9.5 o 1 compression pistons, also a Webber carb, a quicker ration steering rack, and it’s been lowered an inch. It’s alsp been painted and had the interior re upholstered.

So basically all the work is done too bad I don’t have 9 grand laying around
